Tionesta Scenic Area
Old-growth laboratory showcasing forest regeneration.
The Tionesta Scenic Area is a 2,000-acre tract of old-growth forest that serves as a living laboratory for foresters and ecologists. Along with Hearts Content, it represents the original forest cover of the Allegheny Plateau. Although a major tornado in 1985 impacted sections of the area, it now provides a unique opportunity to observe natural forest regeneration alongside ancient, surviving hemlocks. It is a destination for those interested in the raw, unmanaged beauty of a forest in its climax state.
