Tionesta Research Natural Area

A protected 2,113-acre living laboratory for forest ecology.

The Tionesta Research Natural Area is a 2,113-acre living laboratory and one of the largest remaining tracts of old-growth forest in the Eastern United States. This strictly protected area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service to allow natural processes to occur without human intervention, providing a critical baseline for forest ecology research. It contains massive, multi-century-old hemlocks and beeches, many of which were toppled by a historic 1985 tornado, creating a unique opportunity to study forest regeneration. While public access is limited to protect its scientific value, it stands as a monument to the resilience of the ancient forest.
