Tanbark Trail
A rugged 9-mile journey through scenic glens and massive boulders.
The Tanbark Trail is a rugged 9-mile hiking corridor that connects the old-growth majesty of Hearts Content with the banks of the Allegheny River. The trail takes its name from the historic tanning industry, which once relied on the bark of hemlock trees found in these glens. Hikers on the Tanbark encounter a technical landscape of massive boulders, steep descents, and scenic vistas, making it one of the more challenging and rewarding day-hikes in the National Forest.
