Kinzua Dam
Engineering marvel creating the 12,000-acre reservoir.
The Kinzua Dam is a massive engineering marvel completed in 1965 to control the frequent flooding of the Allegheny River valley. Standing 179 feet high and 1,877 feet long, it created the 12,000-acre Allegheny Reservoir. While it provides hydroelectric power and recreational opportunities, its history is also one of profound cultural impact, as its construction led to the displacement of the Seneca Nation from their ancestral lands. Today, the dam’s Big Bend Recreation Area offers a visitor center, fishing access, and incredible views of the dam’s powerful spillways.
