Allegheny River
Nationally recognized waterway for paddling and fishing.
Voted the 2024 PA River of the Year, the Allegheny River contains an 87-mile section designated as "National Wild and Scenic." It is one of the most biologically diverse waterways in the world, supporting several endangered species of freshwater mussels and providing a corridor for bald eagles and ospreys. The river is famous for its "Wilderness Islands," a chain of seven islands protected under the National Wilderness Preservation System that offer primitive, boat-in camping and a "leave no trace" outdoor experience.
